Top 10 Singles - Roundup

So there we are, the list of my Top 10 singles is official, with some entries that surprised even me. Here is the list in full:

The artist that appears the most in the list is Kanye West with 4 songs in the top 25. Counting guest appearances though, Jay-Z arguably trumps Mr West by turning up in the top 10 3 times, featured on his wife's best hit, and my number 1 pick. Robyn deserves a special mention as the only lead artist to be in the top 10 twice, and for bringing the tears quota for the entire list.

There's only one song that was released before the noughties, Bjork's fantastic Joga.The most prolific years on the list are 2008 and 2009, where 5 songs from each year made the cut. It's interesting that only one song, Dancing On My Own made it from last year, my second best song of 2010, Power, being outranked by 2 more of Kanye hits.

Best Single 17-11

17) Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Jay-Z - The Black Album - 2004


Another Timbaland production, his best in the Hip Hop genre, this is one of Jay's best hooks. When he asks you to 'turn the music up in them headphones' you can't help but oblige.

16) Stronger - Kanye West - Graduation - 2007


Kanye's only solo number 1, this is his most club friendly track. The Daft Punk sample was brilliant before Kanye came in and delivered some flawless verses, Stronger is deserved of a place in my list.

15) Russian Roulette - Rihanna - Rated R - 2009


Rihanna may be at her best when grinding around an island beat, but Russian Roulette is an incredible song. The slight change of key in the second verse is amazing, with new things appearing with each listen. An emotional record.

14) Jóga - Bjork - Homogenic - 1997


The oldest song on my list is also the newest entry. Bjork is an incredible artist and Jóga has everything I love in music. Emotional doesn't even describe the effect this record has on me, the vocal and production coming together into something truly beautiful.

13) The Girl and The Robot (Feat. Robyn) - Röyksopp - Junior - 2009


3 emotional songs in a row, The Girl and The Robot is the most tragic of them all. Robyn delivers another impeccable vocal over one of Röyksopp's most hypnotic productions. 'I'm in love with a Robot' never sounded so heartbreaking.

12) Poker Face - Lady GaGa - The Fame - 2009

A song that everyone in the world knows, Poker Face may not be GaGa's best produced, best written or deepest song, but it's most definitely the one I know I'll be playing for years to come. Simply a perfect pop hit.

11) Biology - Girls Aloud - Chemistry - 2005

A song that deserves a place in the top 10 but only just missed out, Biology sees Girls Aloud revolutionise UK pop. With about 4 discernible hooks, and very little structure, its a magnificent showcase of how great Xenomania are at writing Pop songs.

25) My Love (Feat. T.I.) - Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds - 2006


Production so entrancing only Timbaland himself could top it, this is JT's best song by far retaining everything that made him one of the best male artists of the decade. Intricate choreography comes as standard.

24) In My Arms - Kylie Minogue - X - 2008


I nearly put Kylie's Confide in Me here in this place, but In My Arms sees the Aussie at her peak, danceable, hypnotic and totally euphoric. Calvin Harris' best production to date.

23) Sorry - Madonna - Confessions on a Dancefloor - 2006


The best track on one of my favourite albums, the 'I heard it all before' hook begs for you to join Madge on the dancefloor. One of the first songs to make me realise how amazing a middle 8 can be.

22) Diamonds From Sierra Leone - Kanye West - Late Registration - 2006


When you sample the legend that is Shirley Bassey, you need to have a stellar song to back you up. Luckily for Kanye he ended up writing the best lyrics of his career. An epic track.

21) Me Against The Music (Feat Madonna) - Britney Spears - 2003


The dance routine in the video for Me Against The Music is my favourite in any Britney video. Maybe part of the reason I love her energetic hook up with the Queen of Pop so much.

20) Sweet Dreams - Beyoncé - I Am Sasha Fierce - 2009

Queen B's standout vocal moment appears in Sweet Dreams. The 'My guilty pleasure...' section being the best thing she has done since those Crazy In Love horns first began.

19) Greatest Day - Take That- The Circus - 2008

Greatest Day makes me feel like I'm home, those opening guitar twangs being enough to make me feel safe with the song about to play. Take That at their best, especially when sung by them live.

18) Jesus Walks - Kanye West - The College Dropout - 2004

Kanye's most important record, Jesus Walks questions why rappers can talk about Guns and Hoes and yet not about God. A powerful song, with a powerful message.
