Who deserves the Mercury Prize?

One of the most important days in the UK music calendar, today is Mercurys day. 12 albums from a wide vareity of genres have been nominated for the twenty thousand pound prize, which has become a well respected honour over the last 20 years. Artists such as Dizee Rascal, Pulp and Elbow have won the award in the past and with a lot more mainstream acts making the cut this year, who deserves the award this year?

Looking down the nominees, one artist immediatly jumps out. Adele's 21 is the biggest album of the last 12 months, but by no means the best. While the Brits judging panel may reward huge sales figures, where 21 is sure to win in February, the Mercury panal are known for avoiding the big commercial choice. But Adele is Adele, and right now most eyes will be on her to leave with the award.

Taking her out of the equation, I think that 2011 may be the first time someone has won the prize twice, with PJ Harvey gaining huge critical acclaim for her eighth album and fourth Mercury nominated one. Having listened to the album today, it is a good choice, a strong offering considering the lengthy career she has had. Other than Let England Shake, Anna Calvi or Elbow could have a chance. I wouldn't put it past James Blake to get some recognition for his songwriter take on Dubstep too.The only problem here is the similarity with last year's winner The XX. I can't see the panel awarding a similar album the award, but stranger things have happened.

As for who I think deserves the award, James Blake would be a worthy winner for me from the ones mentioned. He has my favourite british album of 2011 so far, so I would be thrilled to see him pick the prize up. Next in line would definitely be Katy B, who from the chart friendly nominees is the best pick. Her album is Crossover Dance Pop at it's best, and is the album from the list least afraid to have fun. The Metromony and Everything everything albums are good too, but are less well rounded as records. Tinie Tempah deserves a mention too, his impressive but flawed debut is still delivering hit singles a year on.

So my pick would be James Blake or Katy B, though I'm sure PJ Harvey will win tonight. Let me know in the comments what you think of the albums nominated and on the eventual winner when the Award is presented at 10pm tonight.

Adele

During 2011, the topic that has come up most when people talk to me about music has been decidedly absent from this blog. Adele is undoubtedly the Queen of the charts right now becoming the first artist of the decade so far to sell 1 million copies of one song, and selling a ridiculous amount of albums. Most people who read my Twitter and Facebook will think I have an almighty hatred of Miss Adkins (the fact her name is one letter off my own does add some irony to the situation). This couldn't be further from the truth...

Adele is most definitely one of the most talented musicians currently recording. Her voice is simply beautiful, full of the sort of soul inflections that the chart has been lacking for years. She has a brilliant recording voice, seen no better than her now legendary Brits performance where she sounded better than the vocal that made the CD. Even when she's off her game, such as at this years VMAs, she betters just about every other artist in the charts on vocal talents, only the late Amy Winehouse being in the same league as her most would agree. I would never dispute this, and while it may often seem like I dismiss her, her talents are undeniable.

When it comes to Adele though, a few things hold me back from loving her. Having listened to both albums, there are very few songs that truly deserve a vocal from someone so gifted. Adele is better than most of the songs she performs on her albums. 21 is universally seen as the best album of 2011, in the charts, public opinion and most likely when awards season comes around. If the album was 12 songs of Rolling in the Deep quality I could see why, but instead there are song after song of repetitive and slightly dull ballads. Rolling is most definitely one of the year's best songs, because it does more than just showcase Adele's voice, with interesting production and a chorus that is incredibly infectious.

Someone Like You is the other end of the spectrum, with an incredible vocal and lyrics that are totally believable. But my issue comes when 10 more Someone Like You's that don't live up to the standard set by the original appear on 21. For me it isn't enough to have a brilliant voice, the songs need to be on par with the talent.

Outside of this, most people think I hate Adele due in large part to one of her songs. Make You Feel My Love became Adele's anthem for the last 4 months of 2010 and into 11 until her new album came out. The reason for this sudden resurgence of a cover she had recorded on her first album? X Factor. For chance a contestant with a half decent voice says she is going to sing Make You Feel My Love by Adele, even though the original was recorded by Bob Dylan, and the song ends up surging back up the charts. This is typical for X Factor, but the song sticks around for another week or two.

This was only the beginning though as when Bootcamp arrived MYFML was one of the songs multiple contestants were asked to sing. Following Gamu's performance that set off tears for judge Louis, the song performed even better, becoming a high contender for the number 1 spot. Used as backing music for the rest of the competition, Make You Feel My Love stayed in the chart well into the new year, being played on just about every TV show on the air. The song never left, and my feelings towards it worsened by the week. I became so sick of the song that any good feelings I had towards Adele were gone, replaced by rage at how often I heard that song.

A similar thing happened for me this year with Someone Like You, which I know Adele wrote following the success she had gotten from her track last year. At least she had something to do with the song being successful this time around, MYFML achieved so much success without Adele lifting a finger, the producers at X Factor doing all the leg work for her.

But forgetting both my lack of interest in most of her album tracks, and my rage at MYFML, the thing that stops me from loving Adele is that I don't 'need' her in my life. It came to me last night while listening to Robyn's live lounge version of Dancing on My Own. I react to that performance in the same way that everyone else reacts to the lyrics Someone Like You, all I have to hear is the first two lines and I'm already in tears. Both are heartbreaking yet powerful songs, full of emotion and soul. For me Robyn achieves the things I mentioned above that Adele's albums don't, because she does it in the most open genre of all, Pop. The way people feel connected to the lyrics on 21 is how I feel about songs such as Be Mine, which is why I don't need an artist like Adele in my life.

Adele is here to stay, and hopefully those people who thought I hated her will have understood where I am coming from. Those same people would probably be surprised to hear that I once 'hated' Rihanna for reasons as fickle as being sick of MYFML above. Though I doubt Adele would eventually go onto to being number 1 on my favourite songs of all time, stranger things have happened! I may still find it hard to believe that there are still people who don't own her album, but I most definitely don't hate Adele!

Top 25 Albums - Updated List

After going through my singles list, I found that my opinions on my top albums had changed a fair bit in the last year. So I decided to rejig my list and post it again here. I've gone for a picture approach instead, with some extra comments underneath. As I have done with my Singles list, it will also become a page at the top of the blog, with links to all related articles.

So there is the new list. 6 songs have been replaced, from the likes of Calvin Harris and the Sugababes, Jay-Z's The Black Album replacing his Blueprint 3 in the list. The most obvious change is that we have a new number 1, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is undoubtedly Kanye's best album, so it had to beat out 808s. 3 other albums from 2010 make an appearance, Robyn's Body Talk, The-Dream's Love King and Sleigh Bells' Treats, which has continued to be one of my most played records. They also mark the second 'group' to make it onto the list, them and Girls Aloud being the only acts to make it.

GaGa becomes the second artist to have 3 albums on the list, though she has a way to go before bettering Kanye who now has 4 of his albums in the top 10 alone. Born This Way is currently the only album from this year, with James Blake and Watch The Throne only just missing out. Much like my singles list, Bjork makes a splash too. Though her album is lower on the list than her single was, Homogenic has made an incredible impact on me in a short time.

I know that to some these lists may seem ridiculous, but I have thoroughly enjoyed looking back over my life with music and seeing the albums and songs that will always stick with me. I'm already plotting my next list, which will be the most difficult of them all. Expect it in about 6 months time, where I will be looking back on a life full of games and what I truly beleive to be the 25 Best Games.

Top 10 Singles - Roundup

So there we are, the list of my Top 10 singles is official, with some entries that surprised even me. Here is the list in full:

1) Umbrella (Feat. Jay-Z) - Rihanna
2) Flashing Lights (Feat. Dwele) - Kanye West
3) Break The Ice - Britney Spears
4) Say It Right -Nelly Furtado
5) Be Mine - Robyn
6) Empire State of Mind (Feat. Alicia Keys) - Jay-Z
7) Dancing On My Own - Robyn
8) About You Now - Sugababes
9) Crazy In Love (Feat. Jay-Z) - Beyoncé
10) Toxic - Britney Spears

And the rest of the list from 11-17 and 18-25 can be found at the respective links.

The artist that appears the most in the list is Kanye West with 4 songs in the top 25. Counting guest appearances though, Jay-Z arguably trumps Mr West by turning up in the top 10 3 times, featured on his wife's best hit, and my number 1 pick. Robyn deserves a special mention as the only lead artist to be in the top 10 twice, and for bringing the tears quota for the entire list.

There's only one song that was released before the noughties, Bjork's fantastic Joga. The most prolific years on the list are 2008 and 2009, where 5 songs from each year made the cut. It's interesting that only one song, Dancing On My Own made it from last year, my second best song of 2010, Power, being outranked by 2 more of Kanye hits.

I hope you have enjoyed this year's epic list, I sure have. I'll be uploading an updated version of my albums list next, with some new articles appearing after that.

Top 10 Singles - #1

Umbrella (Feat. Jay-Z) - Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad - 2007

I have never mentioned the song that sits atop my Top 10 Singles list on my Blog, but it's a song that everyone reading will know. Staying at the UK number 1 for 10 weeks, Umbrella is undeniably Rihanna's biggest hit. For me, it's not only her best, but the best song in my music collection. It combines everything mentioned about the songs that preceded it; it's Crazy in Love from the future, with an epic drum pattern that makes up most of the production. A chorus that is both epic and relatable, with the 'eh eh' hook that would soon define the charts heard in it's purest form. The closing section of the middle 8 has to be one of my favourite parts of any song too, the 'Because...' setting off that massive chorus for the final time. Lyrically and sonically it doesn't get much better than Umbrella. A perfectly simple yet marvelous song.

UK Chart Position - 1
Best Lyric - 'When the sun shines we'll shine together, told you I'll be here forever'

Top 10 Singles - #2

Flashing Lights (Feat. Dwele) - Kanye West - Graduation - 2008

Another obvious one if you've read my Kanye West top 10, Flashing Lights is his best single yet. The production is flawless, giving the rapper a true anthemic song, rather than the club friendly upbeat joints that preceded it. The stomping chorus isn't hook heavy, but instead resonates along with the string led production and stabs of synth. It's the sort of song that is much deeper than your first listen, with hidden meaning found in both the lyrics and overall concept of the song. My favourite song by my favourite artist, what could beat that...

UK Chart Position - 29
Best Lyric - 'She in the mirror dancin' so sleazy, I get a call like 'where are you Yeezy?''

Top 10 Singles - #3

Break The Ice - Britney Spears - Blackout - 2008

A song I gushed over when it reached the top of my Top 20 Britney list, Break The Ice is the definitive Brit record. With production so slick Timbaland would be jealous, and the most intense heavy breathing of the singer's career, this is the song (and album) that I will always use as an example of why Britney should be taken seriously. It may not have been a huge chart hit, and the video may not have had Brit herself in it, but this will always my highlight of Britney's near flawless back catalogue.

UK Chart Position - 15
Best Lyric - 'I like this part'

Top 10 Singles - #4

Say It Right - Nelly Furtado - Loose - 2007

The final Timbaland production on the list, Say It Right is his masterpiece. Infectious synth and 808s are just the start, as Furtado's most impressive vocal to date echoes across them. It sounds as if she is calling across a vast open landscape, an effect that gives Say It Right a unique sonic feel. Everything is unexpected and interesting, the lack of a final chorus leaving you still feeling that drum pattern even after the song has ended. If I was producing music, Say It Right would be the blueprint for the ultimate RnB/Pop crossover song.

UK Chart Position - 10
Best Lyric - 'Oh you could mean everything to me'

Best Single 25-18

25) My Love (Feat. T.I.) - Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds - 2006

Production so entrancing only Timbaland himself could top it, this is JT's best song by far retaining everything that made him one of the best male artists of the decade. Intricate choreography comes as standard.

UK Chart Position - 2

24) In My Arms - Kylie Minogue - X - 2008

I nearly put Kylie's Confide in Me here in this place, but In My Arms sees the Aussie at her peak, danceable, hypnotic and totally euphoric. Calvin Harris' best production to date.

UK Chart Position - 10

23) Sorry - Madonna - Confessions on a Dancefloor - 2006

The best track on one of my favourite albums, the 'I heard it all before' hook begs for you to join Madge on the dancefloor. One of the first songs to make me realise how amazing a middle 8 can be.

UK Chart Position - 1

22) Diamonds From Sierra Leone - Kanye West - Late Registration - 2006

When you sample the legend that is Shirley Bassey, you need to have a stellar song to back you up. Luckily for Kanye he ended up writing the best lyrics of his career. An epic track.

UK Chart Position - 8

21) Me Against The Music (Feat Madonna) - Britney Spears - 2003

The dance routine in the video for Me Against The Music is my favourite in any Britney video. Maybe part of the reason I love her energetic hook up with the Queen of Pop so much.

UK Chart Position - 2

20) Sweet Dreams - Beyoncé - I Am Sasha Fierce - 2009

Queen B's standout vocal moment appears in Sweet Dreams. The 'My guilty pleasure...' section being the best thing she has done since those Crazy In Love horns first began.

UK Chart Position - 5

19) Greatest Day - Take That- The Circus - 2008

Greatest Day makes me feel like I'm home, those opening guitar twangs being enough to make me feel safe with the song about to play. Take That at their best, especially when sung by them live.

UK Chart Position - 1

18) Jesus Walks - Kanye West - The College Dropout - 2004

Kanye's most important record, Jesus Walks questions why rappers can talk about Guns and Hoes and yet not about God. A powerful song, with a powerful message.

UK Chart Position - 16

Top 10 Singles - #5

Be Mine - Robyn - Robyn - 2005/2008

I knew that both Be Mine and Dancing On My Own would appear in my top 10 songs, but deciding which Robyn classic would come out on top was a tough decision. The best track on her near perfect eponymous fourth album, Be Mine is devastatingly sad, the middle 8 being the best 'talky bit' I've ever heard on a record. When she explains 'I just miss you, that's all' the emotional resonance of the track comes into full effect, the string led production echoing her sentiment. A modern Pop classic and the most emotive song on the list.

UK Chart Position - 10
Best Lyric - 'It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain, as if a good thing ever can make up for all the pain'

Top 10 Singles - #6

Empire State of Mind (Feat. Alicia Keys) - Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3 - 2009

The second appearance of Hip Hop king Jay-Z, Empire State of Mind is his masterpiece. A celebration of everything that makes him proud to come from New York, his 3 verses are some of his most iconic. The production is epic too, capturing the true scale of the city. But the real reason Empire finds itself at number 6 in my list is that chorus. Delivered effortlessly by Alicia Keys, it's the most infectious hook of the decade and will go down as one of the greatest achievements the genre has seen.

UK Chart Position - 2
Best Lyric - 'I'm the new Sinatra'

A quick side note, Empire State of Mind was the very first thing mentioned on this blog a year and a half ago. It feels weird returning to it after all this time.

Top 10 Singles - #7

Dancing On My Own - Robyn - Body Talk - 2010

Looking back at my 2010 end of year list article, I don't feel like I did the quality of Dancing On My Own justice. My point about the song being one of few songs to truly make me feel something when I hear it is still true, but the extent of this wasn't expressed. Emotional through and through, Robyn pours her soul into every line of Dancing On My Own. It's a devastatingly sad song yet still remains an empowering dancefloor anthem that will always have a special place in my music library.

UK Chart Position - 8
Best Lyric - 'I just came to say goodbye.'

Top 10 Singles - #8

About You Now - Sugababes - Change - 2007

The only UK act to make it into my top 10, Sugababes have had their fair share of troubles over the last decade. Controversial Lineup changes and accusations of bullying aside though, the fact remains that they landed what I believe to be the best UK pop hit of the 21st century in About You Now. With an incredibly infectious chorus and some of the slickest production from the now untouchable Dr Luke, About You Now eclipses even the band themselves. As Pop music goes, About You Now is just about as good as it gets.

UK Chart Position - 1
Best Lyric - 'Shoud've been strong, yeah I lied.'

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Top 10 Singles - #9

Crazy In Love (Feat. Jay-Z) - Beyoncé - Dangerously In Love - 2003

A song that needs no introduction, Crazy In Love is the highlight of Queen B's long career. The brassy smash of an opening immediately grabs the listeners ear, and only improves as the song continues. The 'Oh Oh' dance hook went on to become a staple of not just Beyoncé, but every RnB Diva to follow. It's sassy, explosive, infectious and incredibly danceable, proved by B herself in the incredible video. Even hubby to be Jay-Z delivers one of the best Middle 8 raps of his career. Crazy In Love set the genre standard and few have bettered Beyoncé's classic.

UK Chart Position - 1
Best Lyric - 'You Ready?'

Top 10 Singles - #10

Toxic - Britney Spears - In The Zone - 2004

Kicking things off with the pop song that even 'real' music critics admit is brilliant. Toxic is a blistering production full of funk guitar riffs and strings, and is a 'Britney' record through and through. What more do you want than heavy breathing, an epic breakdown section and her sexiest video ever? It's a perfect pop song, the reason why Toxic is her most iconic song and thoroughly deserved of its place at number 10 in my list.

UK Chart Position - 1
Best Lyric - 'I took a sip from a Devil's cup.'

Top 10 Singles Intro

1 year ago today, I started compiling a list of my top 10 favourite albums. The list has changed a great deal since then, and I will put a revised one up near the end of this series of Blog posts. This time around though, my focus is on singles, making this list so much harder to construct than my last one. Expect some surprises, some obvious picks and a whole lot of brilliant music. To make it onto this list, the song must have been released as an official single.

Here we go...

The Problem with Bonus Tracks Pt. 2

It has been nearly 2 months since I last complained about bonus tracks, so the part 2 I had planned to write just after this article is long overdue.

This time my focus is on those artists who release singles labelled as Bonus Tracks on their albums. The artist most recently doing this is Nicki Minaj, the Rap Diva turned Pop Starlet who has release 2 Bonus tracks from her album Pink Friday as Singles. Super Bass, her current and soon to be first top ten single, has become one of my favourite Minaj songs, but you can only find it on the deluxe version of her album. In an iTunes era where things like deluxe edition don't mean much, this could seem to be a problem, but it frustrates me when artists release both version of the album simultaneously, then start releasing songs in this way.

Her previous UK single, Girls Fall Like Dominoes was even more of a tricky release, with this song only appearing on the iTunes deluxe package of the album. It was a minor hit, the lack of a video proving how essential it is to have one in the current market.

This opens up an even bigger question, and the other artist I want to focus on here is BeyoncĂ©. As I mentioned last time, B has some serious issues with things like bonus tracks and the overall order of tracks on her albums. All 4 albums have been badly constructed, Bday and Sasha Fierce having revised  versions to fix this. I expect her new record 4 will have the same eventually, I've already made my own perfect album from the tracks.

Speaking of releasing bonus tracks though, the Sasha Fierce era for Beyoncé saw her release what seemed like 100 singles, 2 of which were only available on the deluxe edition of the original album. Her unorthodox way of adding 6 extra tracks to a 10 song CD being ridiculous in the first place.

All of this said, I have a lot of love for both Nicki and Beyoncé. Be glad I chose Bonus tracks as my rant of choice too. If I'd have mentioned a certain Brit school graduate currently sitting atop the album chart this article would have been about ten thousand words long!

The Problem with Bonus Tracks Pt. 1

If you have paid attention to my twitter feed for the past few weeks, you will know exactly what album I have on repeat. Lady GaGa is back, and with an album that backs up at least some of her self hype. But there is one thing that erks me about Born This Way, probably the best album of 2011 so far, and that thing is the 'Special Edition' and its Bonus Tracks.

I have always had a thing against bonus tracks. The idea that including extra tracks that weren't good enough to make the final cut will somehow make your product more desirable is just backwards logic. It is true though that on occasion such extra tracks can be so good that you wonder why they were cut in the first place. either way, I understand that extra content isn't going away, especially with so many deluxe editions of albums being released to make up for lost album sales. There is a time and a place for Bonus Tracks, which is most definitely after the last 'main' track has finished.

This leads me onto the issue in hand, where Lady GaGa, in an attempt to make both versions of her album as special as each other, has integrated 3 extra tracks into Born This Way. At 14 tracks, the original wasn't short but worked extremely well as an album. Only one of the 3 new songs truly deserved to be included in the first place, Black Jesus + Amen Fashion being a much better fit than Bad Kids for example, the other two songs both ending up as some of the weakest tracks on the record.

It frustrates me when I compliment the album on working as a complete 'experience' when the artist herself goes against this by creating two completely different versions of Born This Way. Which version is the 'real' version? My iTunes is set up so that I separate the main album from a set of Bonus Tracks which can be heard in it's own 'album'. This set up is something I have done with Britney for example, who has one of the largest selection of 'bonus tracks' from each of her albums. Britney in particular has many brilliant songs that should have made the album in the first place, but they avoid the risk produced by those lesser tracks by placing everything at the end of the CD.

I've given the 'new' version of Born This Way a few listens but I'm yet to decide whether I'm going to keep the bonus tracks in with the rest. Beyoncé is known for getting her album tracklists drastically wrong, just one look at the 'deluxe' version of I Am Sasha Fierce is all you need to see that, so expect another twitter rant once 4 comes along.

Superlist Sunday: Top 20 Britney Songs 10-1

This is where things get very difficult, I've been making changes to the top 10 even after putting up my 20-11 article. What I can say, is that these 10 songs are up there with the best Pop songs of the last decade.

10) My Prerogative - Greatest Hits: My Prerogative - 2004

The only cover to make it onto my top 20, I never think of My Prerogative as anything but a Britney song. The production, courtesy of Bloodshy & Avant yet again is nothing less than perfect, with synth and tribal drums echoing around Britney's crazy vocal. It couldn't have come out at a more perfect time, or have been a more appropriate Greatest Hits single, and it will always be a favourite of mine.

9) Womanizer - Circus - 2008

I remember my reaction when i first heard Womanizer. I thought it sounded like a castoff of previous album Blackout and would never be a hit. How wrong I was. The song was definitely a grower, as I began to love everything about Womanizer, a song designed to be danced to. The original version is great, but maybe the fact that I have an equal amount of listens to the X Factor performance version shows how good the 'Live' version is. A modern Britney classic.

8) I'm A Slave 4 U - Britney - 2003

As the opening to track to her eponymous third album, I'm A Slave 4 U showed that Britney had moved on from her high school sweetheart era for good, and judging by the video for the song, she was talking about a very particular type of Slave. It's her sexiest song ever, and is the sort of tune where you can hear the sweat dripping as Britney does her staple 'heavy breathing'.

7) Born To Make You Happy - ...Baby One More Time - 1999

The only song in the top 10 to come from either of Britney's first two albums, this would be number 1 if it was a list of the song that made me most happy when I hear it. Born To Make You Happy is just an incredible pop song, it has that distinctive 90s mid-tempo but still danceable quality to it, and was the best thing she had done until the next song in this list. BTMYH will always make me smile, a song that lives up to the name.

6) Overprotected - Britney - 2001

It's evident in this list that there are certain Britney songs that may not be considered classics by most, but I think of them highly. Overprotected is everything I would want in a Britney track, blistering production with plenty of moments to really let loose in the dance moves you're obviously already doing. It's another self referential track, which works so well with Britney's voice, the 'Action!' moments helping to make Overprotected one of my personal fave tracks from her career.

5) Circus - Circus - 2008

The fact that Circus has appeared directly after Overprotected is a telling sign. Both were the second singles from their respective albums, each far surpassing the original track in one respect alone, for being as 'Britney' as possible. Whereas Womanizer could have been sung by someone else, the heavy breathing, dance break and screeching production on Circus makes sure you know who is the true 'ringleader' in pop.

4) Piece of Me - Blackout - 2008

I must say that the next 4 songs would probably place in my top 20 of the 21st century, all of them being incredible songs in their own right. Piece of Me is the definitive self referential Britney track. By confidently talking about her troubles over the past year, in one song Britney made us all forget about the VMAs incident and get on with the fact that she was producing the best Pop music the world had ever seen. The fact that it's written by Klas Ahlund and featuring backing vocals from none other than Robyn (ie The Swedish Britney) makes it her best song lyrically.

3) Me Against The Music (Feat. Madonna) - In The Zone - 2003

Including Boys, Britney has only ever released a single featuring another artist twice. The fact that Madonna chose Britney to be the first artist able to say (Feat. Madonna) on their boxart shows just how much faith she had in Me Against The Music. I said before that Gimme More is the second most Danceable hit in Britney's library, well here is the first. It's her best dance video, and you can't help but get up and let go. It was number 1 on this list for a very long time, and has been vying for second position against another track on In The Zone for a very long time.

2) Toxic - In The Zone - 2004

It's crazy to think that after Me Against The Music, In The Zone was able to deliver a second single that was even better than one featuring the Queen of Pop. Toxic was the song that finally replaced Baby One More Time as her most iconic record, and is one of few Britney songs that everyone agrees is phenomenal. I can't actually think of a single negative thing to say about Toxic, it's the definition of the 'Perfect' Britney record. If so, then why is at number 2 in this chart. Number 1 has to be one of the big hits, doesn't it?

1) Break The Ice - Blackout - 2008

If you know me personally, then you already knew what my pick for number 1 was, Break The Ice is undoubtedly my favourite track from Britney's career. The fact that she has never, ever performed it, the video was animated and the single underperformed doesn't bother me; it's the best track on one of my favourite albums. It takes risks, the fact that the bass drop out after her Janet style 'I Like This Part' doesn't return at all and the subdued nature of proceedings just adds to the mystery around the song. The lyrics are hardly special, but the song is constructed effortlessly, with haunting chants from producer Danja and some of the best breathing ever heard on a Britney song. Break The Ice just takes over whenever I hear it, something all 4 of the top tracks do here. I lose myself when I hear Break The Ice, which is why it has to be number 1 on my list of the top 20 Britney Songs.

Superlist Sunday: Top 20 Britney Songs 20-11

Britney is back! I had previously planned to have a week of articles leading up to this post of the 20 best Britney songs (I may still continue into next week if I have time). Here we go then, here's the first half of my Britney Top 20, an artist who deserves an extended list more than any other. You may be surprised by my choices, some obvious omissions may anger the most Hardcore fans.

20) Lucky - Oops...I Did It Again - 2000

Britney's first truly biographical hit, with songs like Piece of Me and Overprotected soon to follow. Lucky is early noughties pop at its most innocent, showing the purer side of Britney that would soon be forgotten a few albums down the line. Lucky was one of my favourites on release, and is the first track in my top 20.

19) Outrageous - In The Zone - 2004

A song that never made it onto the UK singles chart, mainly due to the video shoot being cancelled following Britney's leg injury, Outrageous is one of the standout songs of In The Zone. As dirty as Slave 4 U, but with tribal production, its a song most people wouldn't place on such a Britney countdown. Lyrics that live up the title make this one of her best Dance jams.

18) Everytime - In The Zone - 2004

In stark contrast to the previous song, Everytime is one of only 2 Britney ballads to make it onto my list. She's always seemed much more comfortable with a thumping bassline behind her, but the final track of In The Zone proved that Britney could pull off a record with a simple piano accompaniment. She made it into a hit too, Everytime being her last UK number 1 song.

17) ...Baby One More Time - ...Baby One More Time - 1998

Probably the entry that will surprise most people, I don't consider ...Baby to be Britney's best song. It launched her music career, and is deservedly one of the biggest selling Pop tracks ever, but while I do still enjoy the iconic video it just isn't one of my favourites. It's still the 'perfect' pop song, and without it we wouldn't have a chart full of Pop acts like Katy Perry and Ke$ha, its always a guilty pleasure too.

16) Boys (Co-Ed Mix) (Feat. Pharrel) - Britney - 2002

The first track with a featured artist on this list, the album version of Boys was great to begin with before Pharrel jumped on it. The single version thankfully ditches the key change of the original, but Boys is sis probably the funkiest hit in Britney's collection. It also created one of her most iconic 'talky bits' in the eternally relevant 'Get Nasty'.

15) Stronger - Oops...I Did It Again - 2000

Stronger is one those of those Britney records which could never be sang by anyone else without sounding horrid. Her vocal here is one of my favourites of her career, the nasally 'Hush Just Stop' making it My favourite Britney song to sing on Karaoke. It was a huge step forward for her musically, into a more mature sounding Britney, and I so often forget that it came from her second album (an album that also contained the early 'classic' Dear Diary).

14) Hold It Against Me - Femme Fatale - 2011

The newest song in this chart, Hold It Against Me was the perfect way to introduce Femme Fatale (ie. Britney's second best album) to the world. From the thumping Bassline, the incredible vocal delivery of 'Hazey', to the dubstep breakdown that would on to become the main sound of the album, Hold It Against Me has enough energy to match any of Britney's older hits.

13) Someday (I Will Understand) - Chaotic EP - 2005

The second, and best ballad on this list, Someday is hands down the best vocal of Britney's career. Genuinely heartfelt, and with little to no computer trickery adjusting her voice proves that she does have actual vocal talent. It's also the best writing the star has ever done, written solely by Britney herself as a tribute to her then unborn first child. It may not have made an impact on the charts, but in my books, Someday is the sort of ballad every Britney album deserves.

12) Do Somethin' - Greatest Hits: My Prerogative - 2005

I've listened to various Britney compilations over the weeks leading up to Femme Fatale's release, and Do Somethin' has unexpectedly become the track I most look forward to. Whether it's because I never gave it enough credit upon release, or just that it's a great song I don't know. What I do know is that Do Somethin' is yet another outstanding Bloodshy and Avant production, both intense and frantic throughout, two things that can push Britney to the limit.

11) Gimme More - Blackout - 2007

I really wanted to put this in my top 10, but the song that despite being one of her best is associated with the worst moment of Britney's career finds itself at number 11. I will go on record to say that Gimme More is the 2nd most danceable song in this list, a feat that is highly acclaimed when it comes to Britney. As the opening to her best album, Gimme More gives you that feeling of being in a club, and without this song, we wouldn't have her most iconic phrase since her first song; 'It's Britney Bitch'.
