Top 25 Albums - Updated List

After going through my singles list, I found that my opinions on my top albums had changed a fair bit in the last year. So I decided to rejig my list and post it again here. I've gone for a picture approach instead, with some extra comments underneath. As I have done with my Singles list, it will also become a page at the top of the blog, with links to all related articles.

 So there is the new list. 6 songs have been replaced, from the likes of Calvin Harris and the Sugababes, Jay-Z's The Black Album replacing his Blueprint 3 in the list. The most obvious change is that we have a new number 1, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is undoubtedly Kanye's best album, so it had to beat out 808s. 3 other albums from 2010 make an appearance, Robyn's Body Talk, The-Dream's Love King and Sleigh Bells' Treats, which has continued to be one of my most played records. They also mark the second 'group' to make it onto the list, them and Girls Aloud being the only acts to make it.

GaGa becomes the second artist to have 3 albums on the list, though she has a way to go before bettering Kanye who now has 4 of his albums in the top 10 alone. Born This Way is currently the only album from this year, with James Blake and Watch The Throne only just missing out. Much like my singles list, Bjork makes a splash too. Though her album is lower on the list than her single was, Homogenic has made an incredible impact on me in a short time.

I know that to some these lists may seem ridiculous, but I have thoroughly enjoyed looking back over my life with music and seeing the albums and songs that will always stick with me. I'm already plotting my next list, which will be the most difficult of them all. Expect it in about 6 months time, where I will be looking back on a life full of games and what I truly beleive to be the 25 Best Games.

17) Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Jay-Z - The Black Album - 2004


Another Timbaland production, his best in the Hip Hop genre, this is one of Jay's best hooks. When he asks you to 'turn the music up in them headphones' you can't help but oblige.

16) Stronger - Kanye West - Graduation - 2007


Kanye's only solo number 1, this is his most club friendly track. The Daft Punk sample was brilliant before Kanye came in and delivered some flawless verses, Stronger is deserved of a place in my list.

15) Russian Roulette - Rihanna - Rated R - 2009


Rihanna may be at her best when grinding around an island beat, but Russian Roulette is an incredible song. The slight change of key in the second verse is amazing, with new things appearing with each listen. An emotional record.

14) Jóga - Bjork - Homogenic - 1997


The oldest song on my list is also the newest entry. Bjork is an incredible artist and Jóga has everything I love in music. Emotional doesn't even describe the effect this record has on me, the vocal and production coming together into something truly beautiful.

13) The Girl and The Robot (Feat. Robyn) - Röyksopp - Junior - 2009


3 emotional songs in a row, The Girl and The Robot is the most tragic of them all. Robyn delivers another impeccable vocal over one of Röyksopp's most hypnotic productions. 'I'm in love with a Robot' never sounded so heartbreaking.

12) Poker Face - Lady GaGa - The Fame - 2009

A song that everyone in the world knows, Poker Face may not be GaGa's best produced, best written or deepest song, but it's most definitely the one I know I'll be playing for years to come. Simply a perfect pop hit.

11) Biology - Girls Aloud - Chemistry - 2005

A song that deserves a place in the top 10 but only just missed out, Biology sees Girls Aloud revolutionise UK pop. With about 4 discernible hooks, and very little structure, its a magnificent showcase of how great Xenomania are at writing Pop songs.

The Problem with Bonus Tracks Pt. 1

If you have paid attention to my twitter feed for the past few weeks, you will know exactly what album I have on repeat. Lady GaGa is back, and with an album that backs up at least some of her self hype. But there is one thing that erks me about Born This Way, probably the best album of 2011 so far, and that thing is the 'Special Edition' and its Bonus Tracks.

I have always had a thing against bonus tracks. The idea that including extra tracks that weren't good enough to make the final cut will somehow make your product more desirable is just backwards logic. It is true though that on occasion such extra tracks can be so good that you wonder why they were cut in the first place. either way, I understand that extra content isn't going away, especially with so many deluxe editions of albums being released to make up for lost album sales. There is a time and a place for Bonus Tracks, which is most definitely after the last 'main' track has finished.

This leads me onto the issue in hand, where Lady GaGa, in an attempt to make both versions of her album as special as each other, has integrated 3 extra tracks into Born This Way. At 14 tracks, the original wasn't short but worked extremely well as an album. Only one of the 3 new songs truly deserved to be included in the first place, Black Jesus + Amen Fashion being a much better fit than Bad Kids for example, the other two songs both ending up as some of the weakest tracks on the record.

It frustrates me when I compliment the album on working as a complete 'experience' when the artist herself goes against this by creating two completely different versions of Born This Way. Which version is the 'real' version? My iTunes is set up so that I separate the main album from a set of Bonus Tracks which can be heard in it's own 'album'. This set up is something I have done with Britney for example, who has one of the largest selection of 'bonus tracks' from each of her albums. Britney in particular has many brilliant songs that should have made the album in the first place, but they avoid the risk produced by those lesser tracks by placing everything at the end of the CD.

I've given the 'new' version of Born This Way a few listens but I'm yet to decide whether I'm going to keep the bonus tracks in with the rest. Beyoncé is known for getting her album tracklists drastically wrong, just one look at the 'deluxe' version of I Am Sasha Fierce is all you need to see that, so expect another twitter rant once 4 comes along.
