Top 25 Albums - Updated List

After going through my singles list, I found that my opinions on my top albums had changed a fair bit in the last year. So I decided to rejig my list and post it again here. I've gone for a picture approach instead, with some extra comments underneath. As I have done with my Singles list, it will also become a page at the top of the blog, with links to all related articles.

So there is the new list. 6 songs have been replaced, from the likes of Calvin Harris and the Sugababes, Jay-Z's The Black Album replacing his Blueprint 3 in the list. The most obvious change is that we have a new number 1, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is undoubtedly Kanye's best album, so it had to beat out 808s. 3 other albums from 2010 make an appearance, Robyn's Body Talk, The-Dream's Love King and Sleigh Bells' Treats, which has continued to be one of my most played records. They also mark the second 'group' to make it onto the list, them and Girls Aloud being the only acts to make it.

GaGa becomes the second artist to have 3 albums on the list, though she has a way to go before bettering Kanye who now has 4 of his albums in the top 10 alone. Born This Way is currently the only album from this year, with James Blake and Watch The Throne only just missing out. Much like my singles list, Bjork makes a splash too. Though her album is lower on the list than her single was, Homogenic has made an incredible impact on me in a short time.

I know that to some these lists may seem ridiculous, but I have thoroughly enjoyed looking back over my life with music and seeing the albums and songs that will always stick with me. I'm already plotting my next list, which will be the most difficult of them all. Expect it in about 6 months time, where I will be looking back on a life full of games and what I truly beleive to be the 25 Best Games.

Top 10 Singles - #2

Flashing Lights (Feat. Dwele) - Kanye West - Graduation - 2008

Another obvious one if you've read my Kanye West top 10, Flashing Lights is his best single yet. The production is flawless, giving the rapper a true anthemic song, rather than the club friendly upbeat joints that preceded it. The stomping chorus isn't hook heavy, but instead resonates along with the string led production and stabs of synth. It's the sort of song that is much deeper than your first listen, with hidden meaning found in both the lyrics and overall concept of the song. My favourite song by my favourite artist, what could beat that...

UK Chart Position - 29
Best Lyric - 'She in the mirror dancin' so sleazy, I get a call like 'where are you Yeezy?''

Best Single 17-11

17) Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Jay-Z - The Black Album - 2004

Another Timbaland production, his best in the Hip Hop genre, this is one of Jay's best hooks. When he asks you to 'turn the music up in them headphones' you can't help but oblige.

UK Chart Position - 12

16) Stronger - Kanye West - Graduation - 2007

Kanye's only solo number 1, this is his most club friendly track. The Daft Punk sample was brilliant before Kanye came in and delivered some flawless verses, Stronger is deserved of a place in my list.

UK Chart Position - 1

15) Russian Roulette - Rihanna - Rated R - 2009

Rihanna may be at her best when grinding around an island beat, but Russian Roulette is an incredible song. The slight change of key in the second verse is amazing, with new things appearing with each listen. An emotional record.

UK Chart Position - 2

14) Jóga - Bjork - Homogenic - 1997

The oldest song on my list is also the newest entry. Bjork is an incredible artist and Jóga has everything I love in music. Emotional doesn't even describe the effect this record has on me, the vocal and production coming together into something truly beautiful.

UK Chart Position - 191

13) The Girl and The Robot (Feat. Robyn) - Röyksopp - Junior - 2009

3 emotional songs in a row, The Girl and The Robot is the most tragic of them all. Robyn delivers another impeccable vocal over one of Röyksopp's most hypnotic productions. 'I'm in love with a Robot' never sounded so heartbreaking.

UK Chart Position - Did Not Chart

12) Poker Face - Lady GaGa - The Fame - 2009

A song that everyone in the world knows, Poker Face may not be GaGa's best produced, best written or deepest song, but it's most definitely the one I know I'll be playing for years to come. Simply a perfect pop hit.

UK Chart Position - 1

11) Biology - Girls Aloud - Chemistry - 2005

A song that deserves a place in the top 10 but only just missed out, Biology sees Girls Aloud revolutionise UK pop. With about 4 discernible hooks, and very little structure, its a magnificent showcase of how great Xenomania are at writing Pop songs.

Best Single 25-18

25) My Love (Feat. T.I.) - Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds - 2006

Production so entrancing only Timbaland himself could top it, this is JT's best song by far retaining everything that made him one of the best male artists of the decade. Intricate choreography comes as standard.

UK Chart Position - 2

24) In My Arms - Kylie Minogue - X - 2008

I nearly put Kylie's Confide in Me here in this place, but In My Arms sees the Aussie at her peak, danceable, hypnotic and totally euphoric. Calvin Harris' best production to date.

UK Chart Position - 10

23) Sorry - Madonna - Confessions on a Dancefloor - 2006

The best track on one of my favourite albums, the 'I heard it all before' hook begs for you to join Madge on the dancefloor. One of the first songs to make me realise how amazing a middle 8 can be.

UK Chart Position - 1

22) Diamonds From Sierra Leone - Kanye West - Late Registration - 2006

When you sample the legend that is Shirley Bassey, you need to have a stellar song to back you up. Luckily for Kanye he ended up writing the best lyrics of his career. An epic track.

UK Chart Position - 8

21) Me Against The Music (Feat Madonna) - Britney Spears - 2003

The dance routine in the video for Me Against The Music is my favourite in any Britney video. Maybe part of the reason I love her energetic hook up with the Queen of Pop so much.

UK Chart Position - 2

20) Sweet Dreams - Beyoncé - I Am Sasha Fierce - 2009

Queen B's standout vocal moment appears in Sweet Dreams. The 'My guilty pleasure...' section being the best thing she has done since those Crazy In Love horns first began.

UK Chart Position - 5

19) Greatest Day - Take That- The Circus - 2008

Greatest Day makes me feel like I'm home, those opening guitar twangs being enough to make me feel safe with the song about to play. Take That at their best, especially when sung by them live.

UK Chart Position - 1

18) Jesus Walks - Kanye West - The College Dropout - 2004

Kanye's most important record, Jesus Walks questions why rappers can talk about Guns and Hoes and yet not about God. A powerful song, with a powerful message.

UK Chart Position - 16

Superlist Sunday: Top 10 Kanye West Songs

I will go on record and say that Kanye West is my favourite artist in the music industry. No one else has the same drive, ego or undeniable genius with music that he does, and across 5 of the best albums of the last 10 years, he's had some incredible singles. This week's Superlist Sunday has me picking the best of the best, which may include some tracks you wouldn't expect me to rate so highly.

10) Heartless - 808s and Heartbreak

Heartless is a great way to start off this list, the best single from West's controversial but incredible 808s. It's probably the most straightforward single he's ever released, with Kanye delivering an undeniably catchy melody over production taken straight from the pop/rnb that was roaming the charts back in 2008. It may have only just made it into my top 10, but Heartless is a track that never fails to make me sing along.

9) The New Workout Plan - The College Dropout

Probably the most controversial inclusion on this list, Workout Plan is one of the funniest, most club ready and downright enjoyable joints Kanye has ever put his name to. The string based production is fittingly deranged, with the hectic drum patterns in the background making it feel like a true Workout. Throw in testimonies from successful users who were finally able to 'date outside the family' and a handclap breakdown near the end that you can't help but smile through and you have a brilliantly fun record.

8) Touch The Sky (Feat. Lupe Fiasco) - Late Registration

In a list of Kanye records, surprisingly Touch The Sky at number 8 is the first to feature a sample. What a sample to make a track around though. Taking us to the church yet again, you can't help but praise West for self referential lyrics like 'I think I died in the accident, cos this must be heaven'. Lupe Fiasco adds bundles of energy to a song already bursting at the seams with joyous brass production, there's no wonder why Yeezy always ends his concerts with his most feel-good anthem yet.

7) Power - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

I wrote extensively about Power in my Best of 2010 article, where it landed at the number 2 spot. Outside of the perfect production, this is probably my second favourite set of Kanye lyrics, the second verse in particular being a standout moment on the best album of his career. Yeezy needed to come back with a bang after the VMAs incident, and Power was his biggest bang yet. Much like the album it appeared on, this accumulates everything that makes his other single so great and serves it in one 5 minute portion.

6) Gold Digger (Feat. Jamie Foxx) - Late Registration

If you want a Kanye song played in a club, it has to be Gold Digger. Soulful is probably the best way to describe listening to this, the sample here making for the most infection track of Kanye's career. Favourite moments? '18 years, 18 years, and on its 18th birthday he found out it wasn't his' is one that sticks out for me.

5) All Of The Lights - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

A song that features so many people that it credits none of them on iTunes, All of The Lights belongs to Rihanna. That isn't to say that you can't tell it's a Kanye record, the epic production with its thudding drum line ensures you always know who is in charge. Outside of RiRi's perfect delivery of Kanye's best chorus since Stronger, Fergie Ferg's appearance is especially welcome, though she gets somewhat outshined by an Alicia Keys 'Whoaaah' mere bars later.

4) Diamonds From Sierra Leone - Late Registration

The final track to appear from Kanye's second album (arguably his strongest singles record) Diamonds will always be a strong contender for my favourite Yeezy song. This is undeniably his best song lyrically, the end of the second verse 'Take your diamonds and throw em' up like your bulimic, yeah the beat cold but the flow is enaemic' being the single greatest section in any song of his. The fact it samples the one and only Shirley Bassey just makes me love it even more!

3) Jesus Walks - Kanye West

It's easy to forget that Jesus Walks appeared on Kanye's debut album, it being the sort of song you'd expect from someone who's been charting for a decade or two. The constant chanting that accompanies his most epic production gives it that Gospel feeling throughout. Jesus Walks was the first sign that Kanye wasn't just another rapper who wanted to sing about Guns and Drugs, he has strong messages in here that are represented effortlessly. The idea of him wanting everyone in the club to start praising Jesus seems ridiculous on paper, but when you hear this song it feels like a reality.

2) Stronger - Graduation

The only album not make an appearance so far, Graduation took Kanye's production into the future, with synth and drum pads replacing the strings and brass of his previous records. Both the sample of Daft Punk and the message of 'that that don't kill me, can only make me stronger' makes Stronger one of Kanye's most universally accessible songs. Unavoidably catchy, and Yeezy's most danceable hit, Stronger narrowly misses out on the top spot on my list.

1) Flashing Lights (Feat. Dwele) - Graduation

Definitely not his most straightforward song, in lyrical terms anyway, Flashing Lights is up for interpretation (as is the incredibly symbolic video). I think it's the production that places it on top of my list, that sweeping string part with a suddenly thudding synth track makes for an aural experience unmatched elsewhere in his singles. It's the sort of song that stops me in my tracks, of which there are very few, where I will stop whatever I am doing and just enjoy the incredible beats Kanye has made. Flashing Lights is most definitely my choice for number 1 in my Top 10 Kanye West Songs.
